In 2024 Headway Nottingham were thrilled to start working in partnership with the Neuro Trauma Service based at Queens Medical Centre (QMC), our local hospital and home to the regional Major Trauma Centre for the East Midlands. Our “By the Bedside” service is something of which we are very proud.
Our experienced staff spend time each week on the wards at QMC visiting individuals and families who are right at the very beginning of their brain injury journey. Whilst we cannot change the traumatic events leading to brain injury, what we can do is offer non-clinical support and advice to those navigating the early recovery stage of brain injury and help them to understand what to expect in the coming weeks and months. There may be practical questions we can help with about finances, mental capacity, preparing for discharge and involvement with adult social care. Or perhaps, just a chat with someone who completely understands, rather than being handed an information leaflet, is enough to help them to realise that they are not alone in their crisis and that they have somewhere to turn when they need support.
